Bonalu is a traditional Hindu festival celebrated predominantly in the state of Telangana, especially in the city of Hyderabad and surrounding regions. It is dedicated to Goddess Mahakali, who is worshipped in her various local forms such as Yellamma, Pochamma, Maisamma, and Kattamaisamma.
What is Bonalu?
Bonalu comes from the Telugu word “Bhojanalu”, meaning meals or feast. During the festival, women prepare a special offering of cooked rice, jaggery, curd, and neem leaves in decorated brass or clay pots called Bonam, which they carry on their heads to local temples as an offering to the Goddess.
The festival is known for its vibrant processions, traditional dances (like Pothuraju), and folk songs, creating a powerful atmosphere of devotion and celebration.
Why is Bonalu Celebrated?
Bonalu is celebrated as a form of thanksgiving to the Goddess Mahakali for fulfilling wishes or protecting people from epidemics and misfortunes. The origin of the festival dates back to the early 19th century, when a plague outbreak devastated Hyderabad.
It is believed that people prayed to Mahakali for protection, and once the epidemic ended, they began offering her Bonalu every year in gratitude.
The ritual is deeply rooted in the belief that offering food and worship to the Goddess will bring good health, protection, and prosperity to the community.
