The Glory of Arunachalam

1. Sacred Abode of Lord Shiva – Arunachaleswarar

Arunachalam, located in Tiruvannamalai, Tamil Nadu, is home to the world-famous Arunachaleswarar Temple, dedicated to Lord Shiva in the form of a Lingam of fire (Agni Lingam). It is one of the *Pancha Bhoota Sthalams, representing the element of fire. The belief is that Lord Shiva manifested as an infinite column of fire at this site, symbolizing his eternal and formless nature.

2. Annamalai Hill – Lord Shiva Himself

The Annamalai Hill, also called Arunachala, is considered not just sacred, but Shiva Himself in the form of a mountain. Saints and sages proclaim that circumambulating this hill (known as Girivalam or Giri Pradakshina) with devotion is equivalent to performing thousands of rituals. Millions of devotees walk around the 14-km path, especially during Pournami (full moon) nights, seeking blessings and liberation.

3. Karthigai Deepam – Festival of Divine Light

The most glorious festival at Arunachalam is Karthigai Deepam, where a massive flame is lit atop the Arunachala Hill, symbolizing Shiva’s appearance as a fiery column. The beacon is visible for miles, and lakhs of devotees gather to witness this divine light, which signifies the removal of ego and ignorance.

4. Ramana Maharshi and the Path of Self-Enquiry

Arunachalam is where the enlightened sage Sri Ramana Maharshi
lived and taught the path of self-enquiry (Atma Vichara) – “Who am I?” He called Arunachala his guru and said that mere presence in Arunachala could still the mind and lead one toward moksha (liberation). His ashram remains a place of silent spiritual transformation.

5. Spiritual Magnet – Center of Divine Power

Arunachalam is said to have a unique spiritual magnetism. Saints say that just thinking about Arunachala or seeing it with reverence can cleanse lifetimes of karma. Many believe that liberation is assured
for those who die in Arunachalam or are cremated there. It is called the “Heart of the World” by sages for its deep spiritual resonance.

6. Eternal Flame Within – Inner Arunachalam

The true glory of Arunachalam lies not just in its outer rituals, but in what it symbolizes – the inner light of consciousness, the unchanging awareness behind all experience. Visiting Arunachalam is an invitation to turn inward, transcend ego, and realize the Self that shines eternally, like the flame atop the hill.
