Telangana Chief Minister Revanth Reddy has announced that the state will approach the Supreme Court to challenge the proposed Godavari Banakacharla river-link project initiated by Andhra Pradesh. He stated that the project, which aims to divert Godavari river waters towards the Banakacharla head regulator in Andhra, poses a serious threat to Telangana’s rightful share of river water. The decision to seek judicial intervention follows concerns that the project was approved unilaterally, without proper inter-state consultation or the consent of the Telangana government.
CM Revanth emphasized that Telangana has consistently advocated for equitable water distribution and mutual coordination between riparian states. He argued that Andhra Pradesh’s actions undermine the federal spirit and violate established protocols on water-sharing and river basin management. According to Telangana officials, the Godavari Banakacharla linkage could severely impact existing irrigation and drinking water projects in Telangana, especially in drought-prone areas that depend heavily on the Godavari’s flow.
The Chief Minister also urged the central government and relevant authorities like the Central Water Commission and the Krishna River Management Board to halt any support or clearance for the project until the legal challenge is addressed. He assured the people of Telangana that the government would take all necessary measures to protect the state’s water rights and preserve the interests of its farmers and citizens. The case is expected to reignite broader discussions on inter-state water disputes in the country.
