Olympics 2028 scedule

Opening Ceremonies & Early Action

The Games officially open on July 14, 2028, with a groundbreaking dual‐venue ceremony held simultaneously at Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum and SoFi Stadium in Inglewood.

The ceremony begins at 5 p.m. PT, celebrating LA’s Olympic legacy and innovation. Notably, some sports kick off earlier: cricket, basketball, soccer, field hockey, handball, rugby sevens, and water polo start preliminary rounds on July 12, making this the earliest pre-opening competition since 1920.

First Medals & Flag Football Debut

The first medals are awarded on July 15, with the triathlon at Venice Beach crowning the inaugural champions.

That same week marks a milestone: the Olympic introduction of flag football, with men’s and women’s medal matches slated for July 21–22 at BMO Stadium, scheduled in prime time.

Mid-Games – Athletics & Swimming

A major shift: athletics (track & field) opens in the first week, running from July 15–24 at the Coliseum, breaking from tradition.

Meanwhile, swimming relocates to the second week (July 22–30) at SoFi Stadium, which will host the final medal races on July 30 between 3:00–4:30 p.m. local time.

Expanded Sports Lineup & Venues

The Games feature 351 medal events across 55+ sports, including five returning/reintroduced disciplines: cricket (T20, July 12–29, Pomona Fairplex), baseball/softball, lacrosse sixes, squash (debut), and more, adding to an already diverse roster.

Venues span Southern California: Dodger Stadium (baseball), Trestles Beach (surfing), Pomona (cricket), Universal Studios (squash), Alamitos Beach (beach volleyball), Oklahoma City (canoe slalom, softball), among others.

Super Saturday & Final Weekend

July 28 emerges as the busiest day Super Saturday with 16 team-sport finals plus 19 individual finals . The marathons, true to tradition, take place on the final weekend. Meanwhile, beach volleyball runs from July 14 through July 29 at Long Beach’s Alamitos Beach.

Closing Ceremonies

The Games conclude with the Closing Ceremony on July 30 at the Coliseum, officially wrapping the two-week spectacle.
But not long after, the Paralympics begin opening on August 15 at SoFi Stadium and closing there on August 27.
