Mayday Call and Emergency Landing in Bengaluru

A commercial flight issued a Mayday call while approaching Bengaluru Airport, prompting an emergency landing on Friday. The pilot alerted Air Traffic Control (ATC) after detecting a critical technical fault mid-air. Emergency response teams, including fire and medical units, were placed on high alert and deployed near the runway. Fortunately, the flight landed safely, and all passengers and crew were unharmed.

Why is “Mayday” Used?

The term “Mayday” is an internationally recognized distress signal used in aviation and maritime communications. It originates from the French phrase “m’aidez”, meaning “help me”. Pilots use it only in life-threatening emergencies—such as engine failure, fire, or severe system malfunctions. Saying “Mayday” three times alerts ground control and nearby aircraft to provide immediate assistance and prioritize the aircraft’s landing.
