Indiramma Housing Scheme Hits Roadblock

The ambitious Indiramma Housing Scheme, aimed at providing homes for the rural poor in Telangana, has hit an unexpected hurdle. The Union Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs has officially halted the first phase of implementation, stating that the state’s current proposals do not comply with centrally mandated guidelines. This development comes as a significant setback for Chief Minister Revanth Reddy, who had championed the scheme as a flagship welfare initiative of his administration.

According to officials from the Union Ministry, the proposal submitted by the Telangana government lacked certain essential components such as clear beneficiary identification, land ownership verification, and alignment with centrally-approved building norms. The Ministry also raised concerns about duplication with existing central housing schemes like PMAY-Gramin, leading to potential issues in fund allocation and project tracking.

In response to the Centre’s objections, the Telangana government has expressed disappointment and has vowed to revise the proposal. State Housing Minister Komatireddy Venkat Reddy stated that the government’s intention is to provide housing for every eligible poor family in the state, regardless of bureaucratic delays. He added that officials are already working on a revised proposal that will meet the Centre’s expectations without compromising the original vision.

Sources within the state administration revealed that over 4.5 lakh families were shortlisted for the first phase, primarily targeting Below Poverty Line (BPL) households in remote villages. The sudden pause from the Centre has left many of these families in uncertainty. Several local leaders and housing beneficiaries have voiced their frustration, urging both state and central governments to cooperate for the welfare of the rural poor.

Political analysts suggest that the move may have larger political undertones, especially in the current atmosphere of Centre-State tensions. The BJP has been critical of several welfare programs launched by Congress-led state governments, and the blocking of the housing scheme might intensify political debates in the coming weeks. Meanwhile, Congress leaders are accusing the Centre of playing politics with the lives of the poor.

Opposition parties in Telangana, especially the BRS, have seized the opportunity to criticize the ruling Congress. Former minister Harish Rao alleged that the Revanth Reddy government rushed into announcing the scheme without proper groundwork, causing embarrassment to the state. He also called for a white paper on the housing policy to ensure transparency and accountability.

Despite the roadblock, the Telangana government remains firm on its commitment to the Indiramma Housing Scheme. CM Revanth Reddy has reportedly written to the Prime Minister, requesting immediate intervention and clearance for the project. He emphasized that the project is not just a political promise but a moral obligation to uplift the rural poor and reduce homelessness.

As the standoff continues, citizens and civil society groups are watching closely. The final outcome will likely depend on the state’s ability to swiftly revise and resubmit its proposal while maintaining dialogue with the Centre. The hope remains that administrative differences will not stand in the way of delivering much-needed homes to those who need them most.
