Delhi Government Bans Fuel Sale to Old Vehicles
The Delhi government, under the leadership of Rekha Gupta, has introduced a strict new rule to curb pollution in the national capital. Effective July 1, a ban has been implemented on selling petrol and diesel to old vehicles.
What Does the Rule Say?
No petrol or diesel will be sold to old vehicles in Delhi.
This rule applies to:
Local Delhi-registered old vehicles
Vehicles from other states entering Delhi, if they are considered “old”
This measure is aimed at controlling rising pollution levels in Delhi.
When Does It Start?
The rule is effective from July 1, 2025.
Purpose of the Rule
This is a pollution control initiative.
Diesel and petrol emissions from aging vehicles are a major source of air pollution.
The decision is in line with National Green Tribunal (NGT) and Supreme Court guidelines on banning vehicles older than a certain age.
What Counts as an “Old Vehicle”?
Typically:
Petrol vehicles older than 15 years
Diesel vehicles older than 10 years
These vehicles are already banned from plying on Delhi roads under earlier orders.
Now, even refueling them will not be allowed.
Impact on Public:
Owners of old cars, bikes, autos, and commercial vehicles will not be able to refuel them at petrol pumps.
Vehicles will have to be either scrapped or converted to electric or CNG (if eligible).
