All-party unity against AP’s Godavari-Banakacherla link project

In a rare display of political unity, leaders across all major parties in Telangana including the ruling Congress, opposition BRS, and BJP have come together to strongly oppose Andhra Pradesh’s proposed ₹80,000 crore Godavari-Banakacherla river-linking project. At an all-party meeting convened to address the issue, the consensus was clear: the project poses a serious threat to Telangana’s irrigation interests, particularly in north Telangana and parts of Mahabubnagar. Leaders argued that the proposed diversion of water from the Godavari would drastically reduce water availability for Telangana farmers, jeopardizing their livelihoods and the region’s agricultural stability.

The meeting, attended by ministers, MLAs, MPs, and irrigation experts, emphasized that water rights should transcend political affiliations. Prominent leaders like BRS working president K.T. Rama Rao and BJP MLA Etela Rajender urged the Telangana government to take legal recourse and seek central intervention. The all-party resolution called for a joint delegation to approach the Union Jal Shakti Ministry and file a strong objection before the Krishna River Management Board (KRMB). This unified stand marks a critical moment for Telangana’s water politics, reflecting a collective resolve to protect the state’s rightful share of river waters.
