“AIMPLB Rises Against Waqf Act Amendments: Nationwide Campaign to ‘Save Waqf, Save the Constitution’”
The All India Muslim Personal Law Board (AIMPLB) has launched a nationwide campaign titled “Save Waqf, Save the Constitution” to protest against the recent amendments to the Waqf Act. The board argues that these changes undermine the autonomy of Waqf properties and represent a direct attack on the constitutional and religious rights of the Muslim community in India. The amendments, passed by the ruling NDA government, have been described by the AIMPLB as part of a broader effort to centralize control and reduce the community’s say in managing religious endowments.
As part of the protest, the AIMPLB is organizing peaceful demonstrations, legal seminars, and awareness campaigns across various cities in India. They have also filed a petition in the Supreme Court challenging the constitutional validity of the amendments. According to AIMPLB spokespersons, these legislative changes give excessive powers to government-appointed Waqf Boards, allowing them to override traditional custodianship norms and even nullify long-held community decisions regarding property use and management.
The protest has sparked a broader political debate, with opposition parties and several civil rights groups voicing concerns over what they call the government’s growing interference in religious affairs. AIMPLB leaders have appealed to people of all faiths to recognize the larger implications of such amendments, suggesting that if left unchecked, similar policies could be applied to other religious or community institutions. The organization has vowed to continue its movement until the amendments are withdrawn or overturned by the judiciary.
