PERMANENT FIXES FOR HYDERABAD FLOODS: CM REVANTH REDDY’S BOLD PLAN

In the wake of the recent heavy rains that disrupted daily life in Hyderabad, Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy has directed officials to take swift and long-term measures to address the city’s recurring urban challenges. The CM emphasized that the capital of Telangana should not just react to seasonal problems but plan ahead with a vision that will ensure sustainable growth and safety for decades to come.

Tackling Flood Issues with Long-Term Planning

Hyderabad, a city known for its bustling IT sector and growing urban sprawl, has faced severe waterlogging and flood issues during monsoon seasons. Low-lying areas, poor drainage systems, and unplanned constructions have aggravated the problem. Addressing this, CM Revanth Reddy has ordered officials to devise solutions that will stand the test of time.

He stressed that the government should prepare infrastructure plans that anticipate and manage the impact of heavy rainfall for the next 100 years. This means upgrading the stormwater drainage network, preventing encroachments on water bodies, and integrating smart water management systems. The CM insisted that future rains should not lead to water accumulation or large-scale disruption of life and business.

Musi River Rejuvenation Project to be Fast-Tracked

One of the major components of the city’s flood management strategy is the Musi River Rejuvenation Project. Over the years, the Musi River has suffered from pollution, encroachments, and neglect. As a result, it has lost much of its natural capacity to manage excess rainwater flow.

CM Revanth Reddy directed that the rejuvenation project must be expedited, with priority given to cleaning, de-silting, and restoring the river’s ecological balance. He also instructed that green belts, walking tracks, and recreation zones be developed along the riverbanks. These measures will not only enhance the city’s flood resilience but also contribute to environmental restoration and urban beautification.

Multi-Level Parking to Ease Traffic

In addition to floods, Hyderabad’s growing population and increasing vehicle numbers have led to severe traffic congestion. The CM has proposed the creation of multi-level parking zones across several parts of the city. By providing adequate and accessible parking facilities, the government aims to reduce roadside parking, improve traffic flow, and enhance commuter convenience.

These parking zones will be strategically located near commercial hubs, metro stations, and crowded residential areas. Modern ticketing systems, CCTV monitoring, and electric vehicle charging points are expected to be incorporated to meet the city’s evolving mobility needs.

CM Revanth Reddy underscored the need for an integrated approach in city planning, where flood control, traffic management, environmental conservation, and infrastructure development go hand in hand. He called for better coordination between the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC), Hyderabad Metropolitan Development Authority (HMDA), irrigation departments, and disaster management teams.

The CM urged citizens to cooperate by refraining from dumping waste into drains, avoiding encroachments on lake beds, and supporting green initiatives. Awareness campaigns are likely to be launched to ensure community involvement in keeping the city clean and flood-free.

This includes real-time flood monitoring systems, AI-driven traffic control, and GIS-based mapping for urban planning.
