Heavy Rains Lash Rangareddy and Hyderabad, Trigger Traffic Chaos and Flood Woes
1. Unrelenting Downpour Paralyzes Daily Life
In the past 24 hours, Rangareddy district and several parts of Hyderabad have been lashed by incessant rains, throwing normal life out of gear. Streets turned into streams as drainage systems overflowed, particularly in low-lying localities such as LB Nagar, Uppal, and Hayathnagar. Continuous showers since Thursday night have made commuting almost impossible in some areas, with vehicles submerged and roads damaged.
2. Traffic Disruption Across the City
Major traffic bottlenecks were reported along key corridors like the Outer Ring Road (ORR), Mehdipatnam, and Gachibowli, where vehicles moved at a snail’s pace for hours. The police were deployed in large numbers to manage the situation, but the intensity of waterlogging made diversions difficult. Tech workers and school buses were heavily delayed, forcing many institutions to announce early closures or work-from-home advisories.
3. Residential Areas Face Urban Flooding
Numerous housing colonies, especially those in low-lying parts of Rangareddy district, were severely affected. Cellars of several apartment complexes were inundated, damaging parked vehicles and electrical systems. Residents of Mansanpally, Shamshabad, and Adibatla reported water entering homes, prompting emergency calls to disaster response teams.
4. GHMC and Disaster Teams On Alert
The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC), along with Disaster Response Force (DRF) teams, has launched an emergency operation to clear clogged stormwater drains and pump out stagnant water. Authorities have advised citizens to stay indoors and avoid unnecessary travel. Emergency helplines have been activated and temporary shelters set up in flood-prone areas for vulnerable populations.
5. Power Cuts and Connectivity Breakdown
Many parts of Hyderabad and Rangareddy experienced prolonged power cuts due to water entering electric substations and falling trees damaging power lines. Internet and mobile networks were also briefly disrupted in several areas. Officials from the electricity department assured that restoration work is underway on a priority basis, but full normalization may take time depending on weather conditions.
6. More Rain Forecast Raises Alarm
The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert for Hyderabad and surrounding districts, forecasting moderate to heavy rains over the next 48 hours. With reservoirs filling up and soil saturation levels high, the risk of flash floods and landslides has increased. Authorities are urging residents to remain vigilant and follow official advisories as the city braces for further rainfall.
