TGSPDCL Embarks on Underground Power Line Initiative

This initiative will primarily target old-city localities such as Paatabasti and Majiliyz, where dense populations and narrow lanes have long made maintenance and emergency repairs challenging. By transitioning to underground infrastructure, the government aims to enhance both the functionality and aesthetics of these heritage-rich zones.

Overhead power lines have historically posed a variety of risks in Telangana’s older neighborhoods, including accidental electrocution, fire hazards, and regular disruptions due to weather conditions or infrastructure fatigue. TGSPDCL’s undergrounding project is designed to address these vulnerabilities while aligning with the broader goal of city beautification. Authorities hope that by removing tangled wires and leaning electric poles, the visual clutter of historic streetscapes can be significantly reduced.

The project will be rolled out in phases over the next few years, starting with areas deemed most at risk or visually impacted by above-ground cables. TGSPDCL officials have confirmed that surveys are already underway to identify specific lanes and by-lanes where power cables and transformers can be safely buried. Budgeting for this ambitious urban upgrade is being closely monitored, with funds sourced from both state allocations and central urban development schemes. TGSPDCL is also exploring potential public-private partnerships to fast-track progress. While the upfront investment is considerable, officials argue the long-term benefits including fewer outages, reduced maintenance costs, and improved safety will outweigh the initial expenditure.

Environmental and technological benefits are also a key factor behind the push for underground cables. Subterranean systems are less susceptible to damage from storms or high winds, which have increasingly caused power failures in the monsoon seasons. Additionally, underground cabling is expected to support Telangana’s future smart city aspirations, including smart grid integration and EV charging infrastructure, without major rework.

As Hyderabad continues to expand and modernize, TGSPDCL’s initiative represents a critical step in transforming the city into a safer, more efficient urban hub.
