Bharat Bandh of trade unions tomorrow

A major Bharat Bandh has been called for tomorrow, July 9, by a united front of 10 major trade unions and their affiliated organizations. The protest is aimed at opposing the central government’s alleged anti labor policies and inaction on labor rights. Key sectors expected to be affected include banking, postal, and insurance services, with employees across the country preparing to join the strike. The bandh is likely to cause widespread disruption, particularly in urban and semi-urban regions.

According to the All India Trade Union Congress (AITUC), nearly 25 crore people, including farmers, workers, and employees, are expected to participate in the protest. The union leaders have criticized the central government for failing to convene the Indian Labor Conference for the past decade  a crucial forum for discussing workers’ rights and policies. They allege that the government is systematically undermining labor laws, suppressing worker representation, and promoting privatization at the cost of job security and social justice.

The bandh reflects growing frustration among workers over issues such as job insecurity, stagnant wages, lack of social security, and the weakening of labor protections. Trade union leaders have demanded the restoration of workers’ rights, rollback of recent labor code changes, and active engagement with labor organizations through formal channels. With large-scale participation expected, the bandh may also spark discussions on labor welfare and the need for more inclusive policymaking at the national level.
