Kailash Mansarovar Yatra to Resume After Six Years

In a significant diplomatic breakthrough, the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra is set to resume after a six-year suspension, marking a major step forward in India-China relations. This sacred pilgrimage, revered by Hindus, Buddhists, and Jains, had been halted since 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic and escalating tensions along the Line of Actual Control (LAC). The resumption comes as a result of high-level discussions between Indian Defense Minister Rajnath Singh and his Chinese counterpart Admiral Dong Jun.

The bilateral meeting took place on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) Defense Ministers’ Meeting in Qingdao, China. During the discussions, both nations emphasized the importance of restoring cultural and spiritual exchanges to strengthen people-to-people ties. The decision to reopen the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra route is being seen as a symbolic gesture of goodwill and a move toward normalizing strained diplomatic relations between the two Asian powers.

Defense Minister Rajnath Singh welcomed the decision and expressed hope that it would pave the way for further collaboration in areas of mutual interest. The two ministers also reportedly discussed border stability, emphasizing the importance of maintaining peace and dialogue along disputed regions. The reopening of the pilgrimage route is expected to boost tourism, cultural exchange, and confidence-building between the neighboring countries.
