“Emergency Was a Dark Chapter: PM Modi Blasts Congress”

PM Modi Slams Congress Over Emergency, Calls It a ‘Dark Chapter’ in Indian Democracy

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in a strong rebuke of the Congress party, described the Emergency imposed in 1975 as a “dark chapter” in Indian democracy. Marking the 50th anniversary of the Emergency, Modi accused the Congress of trampling on constitutional values, curbing civil liberties, and silencing dissent. He stated that the era was marked by “authoritarianism,” where the voice of the common citizen, judiciary, and press was brutally suppressed. “Those who imposed Emergency have no right to preach about democracy,” he said, targeting the opposition.

Modi further warned that the mindset behind the Emergency still exists and urged citizens to remain vigilant. He claimed the Congress continues to exhibit undemocratic behavior, whether through dynastic politics or intolerance toward criticism. Drawing parallels between the past and present, the Prime Minister appealed to the youth to study the events of 1975 to understand how precious and fragile democracy can be if not protected. “We must never forget how democracy was put at risk by those hungry for power,” Modi emphasized.a
