International Yoga Day
International Yoga Day is celebrated globally on June 21, coinciding with the summer solstice the longest day of the year in the Northern Hemisphere. This day was chosen deliberately, as the solstice holds deep spiritual significance in many cultures, symbolizing light, energy, and renewal. Yoga, an ancient Indian practice that promotes physical health and mental well-being, aligns perfectly with the themes of balance and harmony represented by the solstice.
The United Nations officially declared June 21 as International Yoga Day in 2014, following a proposal by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Since then, millions of people across continents have come together every year to participate in yoga sessions, workshops, and awareness campaigns. These events often include mass yoga demonstrations, particularly the Common Yoga Protocol, emphasizing unity, health, and inner peace across diverse cultures and communities.
The theme for each year highlights the evolving relevance of yoga in modern times whether it’s mental health, climate action, or holistic wellness. International Yoga Day serves not only as a celebration of India’s cultural heritage but also as a universal reminder of the power of mindfulness and self-care in today’s fast-paced world.
